Baggett, A. (2007). Introduce SimMan to your Students. Retrieved April 15, 2009, from  http://www.sickkitchen.com/blog/?p=372#comment-609

This website will take you to the blog and comment that I made in regards to a professor's explanation of how they introduced SimMan to their nursing student's. One interesting finding I found was how this program uses a control room to remain separate from students so that student's are left to deal with SimMan's problems all on their own. I also found it interesting that through the introduction of SimMan they do it almost exactly the same as my introduction in my nursing program i.e. having student's listen to vital signs while SimMan talks through all that he can do in the introduction. Overall, I am hoping that this professor will reply to my post about how often her student's are using SimMan and the positives and negatives she sees in his use in the nursing program she is educating in.

Evans, T.  (April 27, 2009). A New Age in Nursing Education: College Degrees Online.  Message posted to    http://www.learnaboutgrants.com/college-grants/a-new-age-in-nursing-education-college-degrees-online

This online blog discusses primarily the positives of earning undergraduate nursing degrees online.  Tabatha shares how nurses get practical experience, community, and a quality education without stepping foot into a classroom.  She explains about how your program helps set up clinical time, and many hospitals have nursing groups for students getting their degrees online.  She does not spend time looking at any potential down falls to such an idea.  Her blog does not specify whether or not she has actually participated in any form of nursing program.

Garrett, E (2008, February, 27). Before "sim man," med schools taught with old-school techniques. The Daily Pennsylvanian, Retrieved April 28th, 2009, from http://media.www.dailypennsylvanian.com/media/storage/paper882/news/2008/02/27/News/Before.sim.Man.Med.Schools.Taught.With.OldSchool.Techniques-3236908-page2.shtml

This article was about med students techniques for learning.  It discusses the benefits of simulation, as well as the "old-school" ways of learning.  Though there are many new advancements in technology for health care education, they are not always easily available or particularly realistic.  This article expresses the benefit of integration of simulation into previous ways of learning.

Mitiguy, J. (2009, May). Text Messages Aid HIV Patients in Rural Areas. Nurse.com Magazine, 1(1), 28. http://www.nxtbook.com/nxtbooks/gannetthg/nursingspectrum_200905/#/30

This magazine is quite unique as it is electronically available and has interactive advertisements throughout the magazine. In the article I cited above it talks about how technology of text messaging is being used to try to remain in contact with HIV patients in rural areas. The hope of the study is that text messaging will help HIV patients to keep their appointments and treatments through reminders they receive over text messages. I thought this article was quite interesting as I never thought of text messaging as a possible nursing intervention to keep in contact with patient’s. However, I do think it is a great idea to use text messaging because it is becoming more and more popular and an easy way to contact someone. I also thought it was neat that the phones they gave out let patients not only receive text messages but also get into contact with health care workers or call emergency contacts. I believe this is a great idea also because it makes it easier to client’s to have the ability to contact medical staff if needed and it also provides safety knowing they have a way to contact someone in an emergency. Overall, as a nursing student I believe that in the profession of nursing text messaging in this time and age would be a great idea to keep patients up to date on appointments and treatments and provide convenience to both the client and the nurse.

Nurse Zone. (2009). Devices and Technology. Retrieved May 6, 2009, from http://www.nursezone.com

This website and particularly the website is an online community for nurses and well as nursing students. It offers information on nursing job opportunities, nursing schools, resources for research, information on the latest nursing practices, links to other nursing-related website, etc. Not only does the website provide information but it gives nurses a place to communicate to other nurses through a chat room, forums online and through blogging. Nurse zone’s goal is to provide a website that enriches not only nurses careers but also there personal life as they realize that a healthy nurse looks at embodying the whole person. Overall, I feel this website has a lots of positive aspects including it being well organized, having lot’s of information on just about anything a nurse could want to know, showing opening nursing jobs, being very user-friendly and having minimal advertisements on the website. A few negatives about this website include that there is almost too much information that is can become overwhelming in certain areas of the website and Nurse Zone makes the claim that it is the only website a nurse ever needs  which is definitely not true for a nurse who is interested in finding evidenced based practice from more than one source. Overall, I think this website is a good resource for nurses including topics on technology. Nurse zone does a good job of showing how technology is impacting the nursing career, I suggest you check out this the web page Devices & Technology which offer various article on how technology is impacting nursing.

Scott, Susan D., Jean Gilmour, and Jan Fielden. (2008). Nursing students and internet health information. Nursing Education Today, 28, 993-1001. Retrieved March 10, 2009 from Cinahl database.

A study performed researched the use of nurses knowledge of online health sources, nurses perception of patients use of online health sources, and the level of education nurses currently receive on technology.  The study surveyed nurses, finding their feelings toward the subject and how they view their current education. It found that most nurses were not very comfortable with the technology that may or may not be available in clinical settings and use the internet less than most health care professionals.
